Waltzing Matilda 25 Word Summary

LI: To Making Sense of Unfamiliar Text

For Reading we have been learning about “Waltzing Matilda” and how a Swagman stole a jumbuck which came from Austraila. We answered the questions on the document in our own words, and read the poem. Something I found interesting was when at the end of each line it always says “You’ll come a Watlzing Matilda with me”. We were challenged to create a summary that is exactly 25 words that talks about the peom or song from the Waltzing Matilda. Me and my group used Gemini to create a picture of a time line of where swagman started to the end that is related to what Barjon Paterson wrote. We enjoyed doing this activity because we get to understand the meaning behind his story.

Shearer’s Strike from 1891

LI : To understand the story within the poem

For Reading we have been learning about “Shearers strike of 1891” and we were challenged by our teachers into putting this text into perspectives ( perspectives is two different opinions and our own opinion with different sides of their story and what they think) between the Shearers and the Pastoralist, The Shearers fought for their right because the prices for the wool had dropped, they persuaded other Shearers ( Shearers are people who cut the wool off the sheep) to stop working because they felt it was unfair that they were not getting paid fairly, basically they protested with the pastoralist to give a better pay and work conditions. But  the Pastoralist ( Farmers/ Landowners ) dropped the pay for the shearers because they had dropped the prices of the wool so they wanted to get more sales. They thought it made more sense to drop the pay of the workers because they needed to get more sales than they already had. They also thought it was the  right thing to do and so they tried to include the police and the government to agree with their perspective. In our opinion we agree with both perspectives because the Shearers they work hard and are not earning a lot of money to pay bills and money to pay for food to feed themselves and their children. The Pastoralists are also right because they need to drop the price of the wool because they are not getting enough sales from how expensive the wool is. I found this interesting because we got to learn about the different sides of perspectives and how my group collaborated and all participated in this activity.

Moodboard – Child coming home in the rain from the store

LI: To understand poetry can transform everyday life into something meaningful. Poets use various techniques to make this happen, creating specific feelings and moods for the reader.

For Reading we were challenged to create a moodboard refering to the book we read which was ” Child coming home in the rain from the store”. But before we created this DLO we had to read about the story, after reading the story we were challenged to create a DLO, I researched about Rain moodboards for inspiration, then I searched up photos that I look like it refers to the story of ” Child coming home in the rain from the store” then I gathered all the photos and put all on a DLO. I found this task fun because I learnt about the story of ” Child coming home in the rain from the store”.

Malala Yousafzai

LI : To Identify the main arguments Malala presents for education and peace

For reading we have been learning about Malala Yousafzai an her braveness towards her learning and education, she was a tenacious young soul who never backed down even when facing a gun to her head, that belonged to the Taliban. Malala Yousafzai did’nt let that put her down even making a big speech to all the world leaders in the united nation, she fought for peace, social justice, and gender equality. We made a poster on one of her famous quotes that she said to the nations, and we chose ” Empower others with the weapon of knowledge,” because it brought a sense of empowerement and was a inspirational quote. Something I found interesting was she got shot on the left side of her head and never gave up.

RISE UP – Shameful stain on New Zeland history ( Provocation )

LI : To identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.

For reading we were given a text to read about and during reading we were challenged to create a DLO as a group explaining what happened to the polynesian people during the dawn raids. during the dawn raids people were affected getting escorted by homes for not having proof that they can stay in New Zealand. Then after reading the text we were challenged to create a DLO (Provocation) about what happened during the dawn raids, explaing if the government of today ( 2021 ) apoligise for the mishaps of the government (1969). During this task we had a lot of reasons why and why they shouldn’t of had done this, but finally we all came to the conclusion of agreeing on why they should of apoligised because without the confirmation of their wrong doings, the next generation will probably carry on the generational trauma. Something I found interesting after reading about the shameful stain that the goverment from 1971 put onto New Zealand but Jacinda ardern apologized for the actions the goverment from 1970s did.

Comic Strip – Once a Panther (Grp 3A)

LI: To identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.

For reading we read a text that was about “Once a Panther” and we challenged to create a comic strip that show a scene related to the ideas of prejudice, justice, or taking a stand in today’s world using thought bubbles or dialogue that explains the image….. Something we found interesting while learning about what happened during the dawn raids was that only the Polynesian people were escorted from their home and were being accused of overstaying in their homes. The Dawn raids would often come in dawn and that’s why they are called the dawn raids, They escort people from their homes if they didn’t have proof  (Visa, Passport or paperwork) that they could stay in New Zealand.

Matariki

LI: Explain how the rising of Matariki signaled a time of celebration, reflection, and preparation.

LI: Create a piece of work that expresses their understanding of the significance of the Matariki stars.

For reading we had been assorted the activity to create a presentation about the meaning of matariki and also been given some activities to the Matariki Presentation that we had to presentate to the classroom. I also learnt that there were loads of birds that had been associated with the rising of Matariki with one of the birds being a kereru, having its own constellation just above the famous orion’s belt, this kereru in the stars does symbolises bringing new begginings, and that Maori people always used to hunt this specific species of bird because it had always been drunk from eating to much food ! I loved learning about the maori celebration because we had been embracing New Zealands indiginous culture which not many people in the world know about !

Poppy Reseach DLO

For this task, LS2 was challenged to create a presentation and present it to our whole reading group. Before we started making this DLO, we had to learn about ANZAC. I learnt ANZAC is a special name for the soldiers who were from Australia and New Zealand. The name came from a long phrase called “Australian New Zealand Army Corps”. I found  intresting flower the  poppies are valued for their brilliantly colored blossoms with papery petals, we can use the dried out petals to create a mild pain reliever and a treatment for really hard, bothered coughs.Next time I present I would need to improve on speaking louder for everyone to hear me.

Mapping the Migratory Flight of the Kuaka

LI: To use Google My Maps to show the migratory flight path of the Kuaka.

For our task we learnt about the Kuaka bird and where it travels daily around New Zealand. Going onto Google maps and going on Google to search up where does the kuaka bird travel around New Zealand when they get back from Alaska. We all know we got a lot of questions why can’t the kuaka bird just stay in one place around New Zealand. The food that that the Kuaka bird eats is Worms , Shellfish and Insects they usually eat it around Coastal Areas like beaches. They stop around New Zealand to refuel their body to have energy to fly to Alaska to their breeding grounds. A interesting fact about the Kuaka bird is that they fly up to 12,000 kilometers from Alaska to New Zealand.
