Why Maugarei Sleeps ?

Far back, in the mists of time when the world was still very young, there lived a Mauga named Maungarei, on a Saturday afternoon when unexpectedly the whole earth shook looking in all directions, trying to see where that loud sound came from. When we soon discovered a very angry bad tempered mountain. Who was awakened from a large dinosaur who stood right in the center where the crater is formed, eating its plants on its Mountain. Unexpectedly a Splash of Magma came out of where the large dinosaur stood. The rage in her explained it all as she stood in horror not knowing what to do as her emotions controlled her. As she stood alone while her family tried to find cover, she felt abandoned, stranded on an island all alone. Maungarei soon regretted all her actions as all her emotions took over her and unaware she suddenly coughed a lot of ashes . Hours passed and still the lava had not stopped, But eventually the lava, Gas, Rocks stopped spitting out,and those who took cover finally discovered Maugarei was asleep,

“Why Maungarei, Why are you not awake? did Maungarei just leave us?” Asked the Children,

Unaware of what was happening, The elders felt alarmed as they explained to the children what happened. Soon after one of the Children asked

“Will that ever happen to me?”.

Shortly after one of the elders shook their head explaining what and why they would happen, Quietly everyone finally noticed, that they had been avoiding there middle Sibling/Child. Maungarei remains silent, As the Whanau live peacefully around her knowing she is still with them through spirit as her heart still beats but everything could change when Maungarei Awakes.

For this task, We learned about Pourqoui stories. Pourquoi stories is a type of folktale that explains why something exists why it happens. For our Pourqoui stories we were writing a story about why Maungarei is sleeping?, during each paragraph I used captial letters, punctuations and powerful words. We used Adobe express to generate/create an image that includes an volcano sleeping by using prompts/powerful prompts. For example of a pourqoui story is, Why do Giraffe have long necks? Giraffes have long necks because they will need to eat off a branch? We need to include powerful words, punctuations and dialogues. I picked this image that Adobe Express generated because it explains about the story by just looking at it.

Time Travelers Podcast

LI: To explore the thoughts and actions of a characters

For this activity, we were challenged to create a podcast interviewing Reverend Samuel Marsden made by Mareta, Brooke, Melle and Haloti. We have been using our Inquiry knowledge to help us write questions that we might have asked Reverend Samuel Marsden had we had the chance to meet him and talk to him. This was a fun activity because we took on the roles of Samuel Marsden and the Time Traveller’s Podcast team. It was like we experienced actually meeting him.

We learned that when you are recording a podcast expression is everything.

Photo Story

LI: To understand the concept of visual storytelling

On the walk to Point England Reserve I notice as we were walking a lot of trees and bushes. These images shows how we cross the road as a school, photos while we were walking, when we got to Point England Reserve and on the way back to school. I really enjoyed this walk because as we were walking we got to experience and learn about Samuel Marsden.

Moment in Time

LI: To write a poem that describes a moment in time

At camp we had lots of challenge activities to try. Our challenge in with our poem was to chose our words carefully so that we painted a clear picture of what we were describing in the mind of our readers. Armani, Sweet-E  and I have described what it was like to walk across the high beam We chose this challenge because it helped me overcome my fear of being afraid of heights.

Pepeha

LI: To let others know who I am so they can make connections to me and my place in the world.

Our challenge today was to write and record our pepeha to introduce ourselves. I found this task interesting because I learnt about how to  say my pepeha in Te reo Maori and I learnt about the Maori culture. Saying my pepeha in Maori made me feel proud because it can make me feel proud of where I am and other people to, to make them not feel scared or embarrsed of where they came from. No reira Tena koutou katoa.

Heart rate experiment

For this activity, we had to try and find our pulse around our wrists and neck. Pulses are the amount of time the heart beats in one minute. We experimented by jogging on a spot outside and then counting the beats for 20 seconds. We then found out our average/mean, for our heart rates. We compared our scores with the jogging experiment, and our normal heart rates. Something I noticed that my heart rate was higher when I jogged than when I was just sitting down. I got a resting pulse of 80, when I wasn’t doing anything, but when I was jogging, I got a resting pulse of 92.

I enjoyed doing this because I found out where I could find my pulse.
