Snowstorm – WLJ

Activity eleven : Write as Many words as you can using the letters in the word : “ S N O W S T O R M ”

For my Winter Learning  Journey, I was challenged to write as many words as I can with the word ‘Snowstorm’ first I started with the word itself, Snowstorm and then I broke it down into its places, snow and storm. I managed to get about 23 words in total. I found this Activity challenging because I had to really think about the words to write.

Whakaari / White Island Volcano

For Inquiry we were challenged to create a DLO explaing facts about Mount Whakaari or Mount Tarawera, but before we created a DLO we got a option to choose whether you want to create a DLO explaing facts about Mount Whakaari or explain facts about Mount Tarawera. Mount Whakaari is aslo known as White Island,`did you know that Whakaari/White Island is privately owned and has been a scenic reserve since 1953.

Cube and Cube Roots

For Maths Group 1 has been learning about Cube and Cube Roots, Cubes numbers are numbers that have an exponent of 3. An exponent is a small number that goes on the right of a number. It shows how many times you have to multiply a number by itself. Cube roots are similar to square roots. The structure is the same but there is a 3 added beside the radical symbol to indicate that you are trying to identify cube roots instead of square roots. But instead of finding numbers that are multiplied by itself twice, you are finding numbers that are multiplied by itself 3 times. I found this task intresting because I learnt about what the differences of Cube and Cube Roots.

highest Common Factor

LI : How to identify the highest common factor.

For Maths Group 1 learnt about highest common factors and to find the highest common factor, you have to find what number is the highest common factor between two numbers, and we also learnt how to do prime factorisation. Common numbers is a digit that is the same in both numbers. Factors are numbers that when multiplied gives a product. I enjoyed this activity because I learnt the highest common factors for many numbers

Prime and Composite Numbers

For Maths, Group 1 learnt about prime and composite numbers. We learnt the difference between prime and composite numbers, Prime numbers are numbers that can be multiplied by 1 and itself and Composite numbers are numbers that can only be divided evenly (it has other multiples than itself and 1). An example of a prime number is 17 can only be divided by another number because the number 17 has only two factors which are 1 and 17. A composite number is 22 because it has more than 2 factors which are 1,2,11,22. This led us to making a DLO explaining what the difference between prime and composite numbers is and adding examples/questions. I enjoyed doing this because it helps us understand the meaning. Something I learnt when learning about this equation is, a factor is a value that can divide a number evenly.

Why Maugarei Sleeps ?

Far back, in the mists of time when the world was still very young, there lived a Mauga named Maungarei, on a Saturday afternoon when unexpectedly the whole earth shook looking in all directions, trying to see where that loud sound came from. When we soon discovered a very angry bad tempered mountain. Who was awakened from a large dinosaur who stood right in the center where the crater is formed, eating its plants on its Mountain. Unexpectedly a Splash of Magma came out of where the large dinosaur stood. The rage in her explained it all as she stood in horror not knowing what to do as her emotions controlled her. As she stood alone while her family tried to find cover, she felt abandoned, stranded on an island all alone. Maungarei soon regretted all her actions as all her emotions took over her and unaware she suddenly coughed a lot of ashes . Hours passed and still the lava had not stopped, But eventually the lava, Gas, Rocks stopped spitting out,and those who took cover finally discovered Maugarei was asleep,

“Why Maungarei, Why are you not awake? did Maungarei just leave us?” Asked the Children,

Unaware of what was happening, The elders felt alarmed as they explained to the children what happened. Soon after one of the Children asked

“Will that ever happen to me?”.

Shortly after one of the elders shook their head explaining what and why they would happen, Quietly everyone finally noticed, that they had been avoiding there middle Sibling/Child. Maungarei remains silent, As the Whanau live peacefully around her knowing she is still with them through spirit as her heart still beats but everything could change when Maungarei Awakes.

For this task, We learned about Pourqoui stories. Pourquoi stories is a type of folktale that explains why something exists why it happens. For our Pourqoui stories we were writing a story about why Maungarei is sleeping?, during each paragraph I used captial letters, punctuations and powerful words. We used Adobe express to generate/create an image that includes an volcano sleeping by using prompts/powerful prompts. For example of a pourqoui story is, Why do Giraffe have long necks? Giraffes have long necks because they will need to eat off a branch? We need to include powerful words, punctuations and dialogues. I picked this image that Adobe Express generated because it explains about the story by just looking at it.

Volcano Animation

For inquiry we learned about volcanoes and what the different types are. What causes a volcanic eruption? The volcano erupts when 2 tectonic plates crash and touch each other that can make the magma rise to the Earth’s surface which can rise and flow out onto the flat surface of land (that can cause damage to buildings and people, etc…). While it’s erupting, the gas goes everywhere including it going higher than the clouds are usually at. Once the pressure is high enough, the magma erupts which could push through the volcano’s vent. What are the 4 types/differences of volcanoes? The 4 types of volcanoes are shield, cinder cone, composite (another word is stratovolcanoes and lava domes. I enjoyed doing this activity because I get to learn information about volcanoes by watching the videos and using our smart searching skills.

Volcanoes

For this task we were challeneged to create a poster explaining all the 4 different types of Volcanoes

The 4 Types of Volcanoes are

Cone : Cone volcanoes are shaped like a cone that has steep sides that go up to a point at the top. When a volcano erupt it throws out lava.

Dome : Dome volcanoes is a kind of rounded hill that are formed thick, sticky lava comes out of a volcano vent.

Shield : Shield Volcanoes are wide and has a gently slope that looks like big, flat hill. They’re made by runny lava that flows easily which makes it spread out over a large area of concrete.

Caldera : Caldera is a large hole on the Earth’s surface formed for when a volcano collapses or erupts. These eruptions empty the volcano’s magma chamber met very quickly.
