Time Travelers Podcast

LI: To explore the thoughts and actions of a characters

For this activity, we were challenged to create a podcast interviewing Reverend Samuel Marsden made by Mareta, Brooke, Melle and Haloti. We have been using our Inquiry knowledge to help us write questions that we might have asked Reverend Samuel Marsden had we had the chance to meet him and talk to him. This was a fun activity because we took on the roles of Samuel Marsden and the Time Traveller’s Podcast team. It was like we experienced actually meeting him.

We learned that when you are recording a podcast expression is everything.

Mapping the Migratory Flight of the Kuaka

LI: To use Google My Maps to show the migratory flight path of the Kuaka.

For our task we learnt about the Kuaka bird and where it travels daily around New Zealand. Going onto Google maps and going on Google to search up where does the kuaka bird travel around New Zealand when they get back from Alaska. We all know we got a lot of questions why can’t the kuaka bird just stay in one place around New Zealand. The food that that the Kuaka bird eats is Worms , Shellfish and Insects they usually eat it around Coastal Areas like beaches. They stop around New Zealand to refuel their body to have energy to fly to Alaska to their breeding grounds. A interesting fact about the Kuaka bird is that they fly up to 12,000 kilometers from Alaska to New Zealand.

Dot to Dot Connections: The Kuaka

LI: To draw the lines between the words to show how the connections you have made.

For this activity, Group 4 created a DLO showing our Dot to Dot Connections about the Kuaka Bird. We used the scribble tool to connect each word and write down information that is related to the text. For example : Migration and Habitat (The Kuaka birds migrate from Alaska to NZ to have a safe environment). We used our prior knowledge to figure out some information about the Kuaka Bird. Something we enjoyed while doing this activity was collaborating and communicating to each other to grab different ideas and learn from one another.

The Kuaka

LI: To create an infographic that tells others about the migration of the kuaka

Something interesting I found out about the Kuaka Kuaka Birds eat marine worms, small bivalves and crustaceans found in mudflats using their long beaks to probe for food. They are also non breeding Kuaka Bird that mainly eat polychaetes which is probably over 70% of the diet, but also small oysters and shellfish. I found this interesting because The Kuaka travel 11,000 kilometers non-stop from Alaska to new Zealand, their journey takes about under 2 weeks to arrive.

Photo Story

LI: To understand the concept of visual storytelling

On the walk to Point England Reserve I notice as we were walking a lot of trees and bushes. These images shows how we cross the road as a school, photos while we were walking, when we got to Point England Reserve and on the way back to school. I really enjoyed this walk because as we were walking we got to experience and learn about Samuel Marsden.
